If you’re in the frame of mind for this type of trail, the Fleming Meadow Loop rocks. There are no sweeping vistas, not an abundance of wildflowers or much running water – just a hike among the trees in some areas with very dense forest. My experience was awesome for contemplation and meditation.

The Fleming Meadow Loop in the Eldorado National Forest is one of the best marked and maintained trails I’ve come across in a national forest. When you hike Trail 8, you will come across many junctions with roads and other trails, but Trail 8 is marked so it is easy to follow. This trail is taken advantage of by hikers, mountain bikers, equestrian riders and the locals who know its secret. Watch where you step though, as horse apples are here and there.

I hiked this trail on the Fourth of July holiday, and even though it is very close to Sly Park, a highly popular camping and recreation area which was packed that day, this trail was lightly visited when I was there. While hiking, I passed two horseback riders, five hikers, nine mountain bikers, and I got to say, “Hi,” to more than 100,000 mosquitos (emphasis exaggerated, but you get the point). An animal in the brush growled I could not see, and I moved on at an increased pace with bear (mammal) spray in hand until I felt safe again. I also came across recent bear scat on the trail.

There is some huffing and puffing on parts of the trail, but if you slow down and take your time and free your mind, this trail has a kind of peaceful magic to it. Words cannot adequately describe this trail – it just has to be experienced – even the with the mosquitoes.
